By-election to be held on 16 October 2010
Due to the resignation of D Ward Councillor David Redmond, a by-election in D Ward will be held on 16 October 2010. Find out more information about this by-election.
Councillors and staff
It is the job of the councillors to set the policy direction of council, and the job of council staff to undertake the day-to-day operations. Council staff are headed by the General Manager, Mr John Rayner, who has a team of directors and managers. See Senior staff.

Clr George Capsis OAM
Party: Community First Alliance. Elected to council on 13 September 2008.
Clr Capsis is a lifelong resident of the Shire, and is a self-employed electrical contractor and ordained Baptist Minister. He is founder and director of several local community charities; currently founder and director of Community Outreach Ministries dealing with family and youth issues.

Clr Carol Provan JP CMC
Party: Shire Watch Independents. Elected to council on 13 September 2008, having previously served two elected terms as a councilor (1983-1991) and as Mayor (1987-1988)
Clr Provan has lived in the shire for over 40 years; she had been married to Peter Provan, raised two children and is the grandmother of three boys. Clr Provan also runs her own company and is a registed Marriage Celebrant, an active member of several committee, and Chair of Ageing Well in the Shire.

Clr Kevin Schreiber
Independent. First elected to council in 1995.
Clr Schreiber M.A.I.C.D. – Emeritus Mayor*, has resided in the Shire for 30 years. He has been a member of the Local Government and Shires Association for 14 years and is currently also its Treasurer. Clr Schreiber is a local small business owner.
(* Emeritus Mayor is an honorary title bestowed by the Local Government and Shires Association – it does not necessarily denote the current mayor of the council.)

Clr Phil Blight
Party: Australian Labor Party. First elected to council in 1991.
A long-term Shire resident, Clr Blight has been a teacher and administrator at local public schools. He has spent most of his life as a participant or other involvement in various sports. He is a university graduate in economics and an elected representative on the NSW Teachers' Credit Union Members Committee.

Clr Kent Johns
Independent. First elected to council in 2004.
Clr Johns is the General Manager of a Manufacturing Organisation within the Australian Water Industry. He wants to ensure that the Shires enviable lifestyle is maintained and that small business is supported in our area.

Clr Lorraine Kelly
Elected as Mayor on 21 September 2009.
Party: Shire Watch Independents. Elected 2002.
Previously Deputy Mayor 2007/08, and Mayor 2008/09. Clr Kelly is married with two children and is trained nurse and midwife. She currently is a director of the Business Enterprise Centre, a member of the Hazelhurst Board and chairs the Crime Prevention & Community Safety Committee, Economic Development Committee, Tourism Committee, and Strategy & Direction Committee.

Clr Mark Buttigieg
Party: Australian Labor Party (NSW Branch). Elected 13 September 2008.
Clr Buttigieg has lived in the Shire for over 30 years. He is a qualified Electrical Tradesman with certificate qualifications in Electrical Engineering; he also has degrees in political science and economics (1st Class Honours). Clr Buttigieg is employed as a Trainer of Electrical Distribution System Operators and sits on the executive of the Electrical Trades Union NSW Branch. He is married with a son.

Clr Margaret Hargrave
Party: Shire Watch Independents. Elected 13 September 2008.
Clr Hargrave is a retired English teacher with a deep interest in the Arts and in mentoring young writers. She has been a music student, registered nurse, academic, rural journalist and co-manager of a mixed farm. Her second novel received an award. She first moved to the Shire (Jannali) in 1954.

Clr Craig McCallum
Independent. Elected 13 September 2008.
Clr McCallum is married with three children; he was born at Cronulla and has been a Shire resident all his life. He is the past President of the Sutherland Shire Football Association and is a local football referee. He currently owns small businesses in the horticulture and leisure industries.Clr McCallum is an SES volunteer.

Clr Howard Boorman
Party: Shire Watch Independents. Elected 13 September 2008.
Councillor Boorman's a partner in a consulting firm, offering executive coaching, team development, facilitation and counselling. He has qualifications in corporate management, counselling and adult education, and has had articles on leadership, facilitation and project management published in Australia and overseas. He's lived in the Shire for over 20 years.

Clr Jan Forshaw, Assoc. Dip. W.W.
Elected as Deputy Mayor on 21 September 2009.
Party: Australian Labor Party (NSW Branch). First elected to council in 2004.
Clr Forshaw is married with three children and has been a Shire resident all her life. She is active in services for children, the aged and community groups, previously working as a qualified welfare worker.

Clr Melanie Gibbons
Independent. First elected to council in 2004.
Clr Gibbons works to raise funds for a charity that assists people with disabilities. She has previous experience working in the real estate industry and for both state and federal members of parliament. Clr Gibbons has lived in the Shire for 29 years.

Clr Steve Simpson
Independent. First elected to council in 1995. Clr Simpson is a National Safety Manager with an engineering background. He has been a resident of Sutherland Shire for over 20 years.

Clr Peter Towell
Party: Shire Watch Independents. Elected 13 September 2008.
Clr Towell is a head teacher of plumbing at TAFE. He is a licensed plumber, drainer and gasfitter, has had extensive experience in small business and has owned a local plumbing business for more than 20 years. He has also studied health and building surveying and has a Bachelor of Adult Education. Prior to his election Clr Towell was President of the Menai West Barden Ridge Precinct Residents Association. He has lived in the Menai area for more than 18 years.

Past and present councillors
Council produces a publication called 'Councillors 1906 and onwards' which lists all councillors, Shire presidents/mayors and deputy Shire presidents/mayors since Sutherland Shire Council began in 1906.
This publication, plus much more information on the history of council and the Shire, is available in the local studies section of Central Library at Sutherland. The publication can also be downloaded below - you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
